CALM AS ANAMBRA PREPARES TO VOTE PDF Print E-mail

14 hours to the scheduled Anambra state gubernatorial election, the state appears set to prove majority of Nigerians wrong. The much anticipated clashes between political parties has not manifested. What is visible is a calmness which seemed to have enveloped major cities in the state.

At Awka, the state capital, battle ready anti riot Policemen had been deployed to all nooks and crannies of the state in a manner calculated to instil fear in the minds of political chieftains and stalwarts who would ordinarily cause a breach of public peace.

The battle appears to have narrowed between Prof Chukwuma Charles Soludo of the Peoples Democratic Party, Peter Obi of the All Progressive Grand Alliance who is the incumbent Governor, Dr. Nwabueze Chris Ngige of the Action Congress and Dr. Nnamdi Uba of the Labour Party.

Pundits posit that one of these four candidates  will emerge winner of the election even though there are 25 contestants battling for the votes of the One Million, Eight Hundred and Eighty Five Thousan, Two Hundred and Twenty Seven registered voters who are expected to cast their votes at the polls tommorrow.

At about 11:00 am today, the Resident Electoral Commission informed elendureports.com that all vital and sensitive election materials have been distributed to all all the local council areas and assured that these materials will be available on time fior the commemncement of voting in all the Four Thousand Six Hundred and Twenty Three polling units in the Three Hundred and Twenty Six election wards in the state.

The REC; Mr. Josiah Uwazuruonye further stated that all registered s where to go and cast their votes and called on them to exercise their franchise and leave the polling stations. This instruction is however contrary to the instructions being dished out by the contesting political parties to their supporters. They have directed their supporters to cast their votes and stay there at the polling stations to ensure that their votes are counted. It is left to be seen how this plays out tommorrow at the varrious polling stations scattered around the state.

Most people who spoke to this medium tipped beleve that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to emerge winner of the election. They argued the party has two candidates in the person of Prof Soludo and Andy Uba of the Labour party who was the party’s candidate in the last election in 2007 which was later aborted by the Supreme Court which held that Governor Peter Obi’s tenure was still subsisting when the election was held.

Most party members are expected to give the Labour candidate their protest votes to express their disgust over the imposition of Soludo on the party by the party’s National Working Committee. The general beliefrunning around the state is that Andy Uba will abandon the Labour Party if he wins the election and return back to the PDP where his kid brother; Mr. Chris Uba is a member of the Board of Trustees. The younger Uba is openly campaigning for his elder brother which in itself tends to give credence to the general belief.

About Twenty Three Thousand armed security personel and Fifteen Thousand Security and Civil Defence Corp members are in the state for tommorrows poll.
