The ongoing face-off between President Olusegun Obasanjo and his deputy, Atiku Abubakar may claim another victim. From very reliable sources, Elendureports.com has learnt that the National Association of Nigerian Students has been under pressure from both camps to bend to each of the competing groups.

According to our sources, Special Assistant to Pres. Olusegun Obasanjo on Student Affairs, Kolade Akinjo, approached the leadership of NANS to urge them to call out their members to embark on a massive protest against Vice President Atiku Abubakar.  Sources in Abuja told Elendureports.com that Akinjo gave some members of the NANS leadership about two million, seven hundred thousand naira (N2,700,000.00) to encourage and aid them in a protest against Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Thursday, September 21.

In a telephone chat with Elendureports.com, Kolade Akinjo denied any knowledge of the proposed protest. “I am not aware of it. It is their responsibility to do so. None of them is less than 18…they should know what is good for them,” Akinjo said. On the allegation that he distributed millions of naira to some people in the leadership of NANS, Akinjo also denied, saying: “Who am I to give two million naira to anybody? You should come and give me the money and me too will join in the protest.”

Femi Osabinu, President of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) told this reporter, “We are getting different information from different interested persons mostly encouraging us to do protests. We are not thinking along those lines. Me and EXCO are under pressure. There is a rift now within the EXCO but it is still manageable.” Asked why he would not embark on a protest against the Vice President, Osabinu said, “We just don’t come into the public and start saying what we don’t have a deep knowledge of.”

We also confronted the NANS president with allegations of money exchanging hands between him, his executive and the various camps. Osabinu said, “I’m not disposed to money being given to anybody. My EXCO cannot go and collect money like that.”http://www.elendureports.com

Elendureports.com was reliably informed that posters, banners, T shirts and caps have been produced in readiness for the anti-Atiku protest. Our sources indicate that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees Chairman, Tony Annenih is not in support of the planned protest. Annenih is still bitter with the President for scheming him out of some juicy oil deals.

This reporter and the President of the National Association of Nigerian (NANS) were supposed to meet at a hotel in Abuja. The President of NANS failed to show up and after waiting for him for over thirty minutes and with several calls to his cell phone unanswered, we decided to go to press.
